The easiest way I think is to backup your dev_hdd0/home/ folder, and back up your dev_flash2/etc folder. If you have these 2 backed up together, consider it like a complete "save state" of your ps3 for all your games saves, all your user account details, and all your ps3 settings.

So here's the story. My PS3 wouldn't update to latest fw so i decided to try to install CFW. how ever i got stuck on the memory dump step. It just froze there. So i tried to do a safe mode start and tried all the options with no luck. So now i decides that the file system might been corrupt. So i swiped the HD, and now the PS3 wouldn't even boot.

Actually,before taking it apart,put a disk inside the disk drive first.It doesnt matter if it doesnt read the disk with a droken laser,it just needs to put the console into blueraydrive mode. So do this first. -put a disk inside the disk drive. -turn the ps3 off. -turn it back on. -see if the update completes.
The cord need to stay plugged in will in the safe mode. Also to move between the items in the safe mode, you use the direction buttons (left side) not the analog stick. I had this same problem and can confirm the issue was resolved by using a different, presumably "data" USB cable. Restart in Safe Mode. PS3 tried updating to newest OFW, but now is stuck on installing @99%. I have to unplug it or it'll be stuck indefinitely. This is a slim ps3, CECH-2501A. I did the safe mode recovery sequence, doesn't work. Goes straight to update process. I don't mind replacing the HDD, which would cancel the update process.
